APSU Lady Govs Basketball finishes non-conference schedule at Mississippi Rebels

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State Univeristy Women’s basketball team returns from its Christmas Break with an 11:30am, Monday contest at Mississippi.

It will be the Lady Govs final non-conference outing and will serve as a final tune-up before they open Ohio Valley Conference play five days later.

December hasn’t been kind to the Lady Govs who have not posted a win during the month and bring a six-game losing streak into Monday’s affair.

Austin Peay’s defense has struggled against the month’s tougher schedule – the six opponents have a combined 50-20 record against Division I squads – allowing opponents to shoot 46.7 percent and average 81.0 points per game.

Freshman Tearra Banks was named to the Wichita State Winter Classic all-tournament team and is the OVC’s reigning Freshman of the Week after averaging 13.5 points and 10 rebounds in the tournament’s two games.

Meanwhile, APSU’s guards have been led by junior Kristen Stainback and sophomore Tiasha Gray who have scored 62 points (10.3 ppg) each during December’s six games.

Austin Peay Lady Govs

Austin Peay brings a six-game losing streak into Monday’s contest, its longest losing streak this season. Sophomore guard Tiasha Gray leads the Lady Govs in scoring (14.3 ppg) and assists (4.8 apg) and her 4.7 rebounds per game ranks third on the team this season. Six different Lady Govs have led the team in scoring during the season.

Freshmen Tearra Banks led the Lady Govs scorers for the second time this season with 17 points at Wichita State. Freshman Beth Rates led APSU in scoring against Omaha (12 points), the second time she has done so this season… Gray has led the Lady Govs in scoring six times this season and APSU is 2-4 in those games.

Mississippi Rebels

Mississippi saw a seven-game win streak stopped with a narrow 87-80 loss at nationally-ranked Baylor, December 18th, in their last outing. The Rebels own two wins against OVC teams this season, picking off Jacksonville State (83-62, November 8th) and Tennessee State (77-61, November 24th). Mississippi has averaged 74.8 points per game this season and has topped the 70-point mark in eight consecutive games.

Junior forward Tia Faleru is averaging a double-double – 16.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game – for the campaign and has seven double-doubles this season, including a 22-point, 10-rebound performance at Baylor.
