Clarksville, TN – According to the National Weather Service, an arctic blast with accumulating snow will strike Middle Tennessee Sunday and Sunday night
The leading edge of frigid arctic air will push into Northwest Middle Tennessee around noon Sunday, crossing the I-65 corridor around 3:00pm, and the Cumberland Plateau around 6:00pm.
As this cold front passes…Rain will suddenly change to snow as temperatures plummet. For areas west of the Cumberland Plateau, bursts of snow will occur from Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening with 1 to 3 inch amounts of accumulation to be expected; while locally higher accumulation totals of near 4 inches cannot be ruled out north of I-40.
For the Upper Cumberland Region and Plateau snow will begin around 6:00pm, and the snow will continue through the night. Accumulations of 2 to 4 inches will be common; with locally heavier amounts up to 6 inches could occur for the highest elevations from Jamestown to Monterey.
The snowfall combined with rapidly falling temperatures will cause roads to become snow covered and slippery across the mid state region.
An additional danger for Sunday night will be the extreme cold conditions. Actual temperatures will drop into the single digits, and Gusty northwest winds will produce wind chills as cold as 10 below zero late Sunday night. Frostbite and hypothermia could occur if precautions are not taken.
Those venturing outdoors should dress warmly, limit their time outdoors. People who must travel should be prepared for the cold conditions with extra clothing and blankets.
