Tennessee Department of Health says “Emma” and “William” are Tennessee’s Most Popular Baby Names for 2013

Tennessee Department of Health - TDOHNashville, TN – Tennessee’s modern tradition for the top names for new babies continued in 2013, with Emma and William taking the number one spots for a third consecutive year as the most popular names given by new Tennessee parents.

William has been the number one name chosen for new baby boys born in Tennessee for seven straight years. Emma repeats as the most popular name for Tennessee baby girls after taking the top spot on the list in 2011.

While the most popular names for both girls and boys born in 2013 in Tennessee remain largely unchanged from the previous year, a new name made its way into the top 10 list of both girls’ and boys’ names this year.

Elizabeth is a new addition to the 2013 list of Tennessee’s most popular names for girls, replacing Chloe as the eighth most popular name. The other girls’ names in the top ten are unchanged from 2012, although their rankings have shifted.

William has been the top choice for boys’ names in Tennessee since 2007, and the top four choices for boys’ names remain unchanged from 2012. John is a new addition to the top ten list, replacing Michael as number ten from last year. The number two names, Ava and Mason, are also unchanged since 2012.

All new babies born in Tennessee are now greeted with a “Welcome Baby” package as part of an innovative outreach effort designed to screen families and children for risks at the time of a child’s birth; provide timely referrals to address family needs; connect children and families with appropriate services and improve utilization of community resources.

The packet contains a letter of congratulations from First Lady Crissy Haslam, information on the kidcentral tn website, sign-up material for the family’s local Imagination Library chapter and more.

In addition to the packet, some families receive a follow-up phone call from a nurse and may be scheduled for a voluntary home visit by a local community outreach team member, with additional contacts made with the family during the first year of the child’s life to connect the family with resources.

Nearly 16,000 babies have received a Welcome Baby packet since the initiative was launched in October 2013, and more than 900 families of newborns have received an outreach contact during this time.

Tennessee families are encouraged to visit kidcentral tn, a one-stop shop to connect them with important information and resources provided by state government departments and agencies.
