Tennessee Representative Joe Pitts talks about President Tim Hall Leaving Austin Peay State University

“…they are leaving our university a much stronger institution because of their commitment to servant leadership.”

Tennessee State Representative - House District 67Clarksville, TN – The recent news of the departure of Austin Peay State University President Tim Hall to become the next leader at Mercy College in New York is certainly a blow to our community, especially those of us who are Austin Peay alums.

It is difficult if not impossible to measure the positive impact on our university by Tim and the APSU First Lady Lee Hall.

It must be said though that Tim and Lee Hall have infused a new standard of excellence at our alma mater, and they have made an equal, if not greater impact on higher education in our beloved state.

We have had the grand pleasure of getting to know Tim and Lee, as people first then as leaders. Their warmth, charm, intellect, and great passion for people were evident from the first moment we talked to them.

We learned that being a public university president is an extraordinarily difficult task, even in the best financial and political climates. Tim handled the delicate duties with great aplomb and diplomacy.

Lee was the consummate first lady who walked beside her husband as his hours stretched long into the night on most days, even at the expense of family time.

While they have left an indelible mark and legacy at APSU, one that will be quite difficult to duplicate and improve upon, we know two things about Tim and Lee. First they are leaving our university a much stronger institution because of their commitment to servant leadership.

And second, we know they will do for Mercy College what they did for Austin Peay. That is create a quality learning environment where faculty, staff and students are challenged to first improve themselves, and then serve those around them.

We will miss Tim and Lee Hall in Tennessee. They are simply outstanding human beings.
