Montgomery County, TN – The latest organization to complete the requirements for the Clarksville-Montgomery County Green Certification Program is the Clarksville City Garage.
City of Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan, Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers, and Chamber of Commerce Director Melinda Shepard were among those there to congratulate the City Garage for their work.
City Garage Manager Randy Reese responded, “I have a great team of people to work with. We have been conserving our resources for years, looking for ways to reuse products rather than disposing of them. Disposing of products costs more money than it does to find a re-use or another source that can use them. We used to pay $750.00 to $800.00 a month to dispose of our tires but our tires are now taken away without charge from our tire supplier. The bay you are standing in is heated by used oil that has been filtered to use as heat. If a City vehicle is totaled, we pull off whatever parts we think could be reused on another vehicle in the future. We try to make sure nothing goes to waste.”
Reese added, “A few years ago we were able to update to more efficient lighting throughout the building, which has made a big difference. Since being involved with the program, we’ve improved our recycling and increased the number of items we recycle. Also, we added additional energy initiatives such as setting back the thermostats during unoccupied times, encouraging employees to recycle at home, and we acquired another vendor source for plastic that once had to be thrown away.”
Our most important purpose is to maximize the efficiency and life span of City vehicles and other equipment. This is done through thorough and regular maintenance, something we are very proud of.”
Bowers asked if employees are taking the environmental efforts home with them, to which at least half the employees said they were now recycling at home. She thanked them for their work in keeping items out of the County landfill.
City Projects Manager, Daniel Binkley, who is leading the effort to have all Clarksville City Departments CMC Green Certified, also thanked the City Garage employees for their history of being good stewards of resources as well as their continued momentum in conservation.
The Clarksville City Garage provides preventative maintenance and repair service for more than 2,166 pieces of equipment ranging from vehicles to lawn mowers and chainsaws.
