Cunningham, TN – Montgomery Central High School came out and dominated the opening quarter, January 9th, in their District 11-AA contest versus Hickman County High School at the Thomas-Young Gymnasium, but the final three quarters weren’t kind to the Lady Indians as they fell to the Lady Bulldogs, 53-36.
The Lady Indians (5-8, 1-4 District 11-AA) jumped out to a quick start scoring 10 of the first 14 points of the game to lead by six, midway through the opening period.
Hickman County would rally to tie the game by going on a 6-0 run over a span of 57 seconds to knot the score at 10-10, with 2:03 left.
But the Lady Indians closed out the first quarter by scoring the final seven points of the period, to build its biggest lead of the game, 17-10, after the first eight minutes of play.Montgomery Central would push the lead to nine points, with the opening bucket of the second quarter by MaKayla Flake, just 15 seconds into the quarter.
The Lady Indians would still be up nine points, 22-13, following an old-fashioned three-point play by Mallory Flake, with 6:48 left before intermission.
But that would be the last points scored for the Lady Indians over the next 2:39, as the Lady Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run – including six straight by Ginger Conder – to cut the Lady Indians lead down to one point, 22-21, with 4:16 left in the first half.
Conder scored 14 of her game-high 19 points in the first half.
Two free throws by Montgomery Central’s Tori Moore ended the Hickman County run, at the 4:09 mark, but the Lady Indians would go cold from the floor over the final four minutes of the first half, with Hickman County closing out the half by outscoring Montgomery Central 6-2 to take a 27-26 advantage into halftime.
But as bad as the second quarter was for the Lady Indians the third was even worse, as Montgomery Central was outscored 10-3 in the period – with the only points coming on a three-point field goal by Mallory Flake, with 1:47 left to make it 37-29 Hickman County heading into the final quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs would score the first six points of the final quarter to build its’ biggest lead of the night at 15 points, 44-29, with the Lady Indians never getting any closer than 13 points the rest of the game.
The Lady Indians return to action January10th, as they host Camden High School in a 6:00p.m. District 11-AA contest.
