APSU Lady Govs lose 76-68 to Murray State Racer despite 17 point effort by Tearra Banks

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUMurray, KY – Freshman Tearra Banks helped lead a second-half charge and finished with 17 points but it wasn’t enough as Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team dropped a 76-68 Ohio Valley Conference decision to Murray State, Saturday, at the CFSB Center.

Austin Peay (3-13, 0-3 OVC) trailed by 13 points midway through the second half when Banks found her stride. She scored seven consecutive points as part of a 14-5 APSU run that slashed the deficit to four points, 53-49, in just four minutes.

Murray State (8-7, 1-2) responded with a 7-0 run just moments later to rebuild its double-digit lead, 62-51, at the 6:21 mark. The Racers made four straight free throws during that run and they would make 16 free throws in the final 6:21 to maintain its lead.

Tearra BanksBoth teams got off to a halting start and the game was tied 6-6 after the opening four minutes. Murray State would break the tie with the game’s next three points, but it was a barrage of five straight three pointers that gave it its first 10-point lead, 23-13, with 10:38 left in the first half.

Murray State would push its lead to 14 points with 3:19 left before the teams exchanged three-pointers to end the game. Freshmen Emily Fox and Jacey Scott each hit three pointers in the final stretch, Scott’s setting the halftime score at 38-27.

Nicole OlszewskiBanks scored 13 of the Lady Govs 41 second-half points en route to her career-high tying 17-point performance. Senior guard Nicole Olszewski chipped in 13 points and junior Kristen Stainback scored 10 points.

Murray State’s Keiona Kirby led all scorers with 22 points, thanks to an 11-of-14 performance at the free-throw line. Taylor Porter added 17 points off the bench.

Austin Peay continues its four-game OVC road trip with a 5:00pm (CT), Monday contest at Morehead State.
