APSU Lady Govs Track and Field face strong teams at the Niswonger Invite

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team heads to Johnson City, TN for the 36th Annual Niswonger Invitational, January 17th-18th, hosted by East Tennessee State at the Mountain States Health Alliance Athletics Center.

The Lady Govs will be in a strong field at the annual event. Joining the Lady Govs and host ETSU in Johnson City will be schools from around the Southeast, including Western Carolina, USC Upstate, Alabama State and Ohio Valley Conference foes Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech.

“The Niswonger is always a tough, early-season event,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “We’ve had some good success there in the past and I think we’ll have similar success in this meet.

“I was very pleased with our performance last week. We stayed in good shape over the break, which is sometimes a concern. By not having to work our way back into shape, we’ll be much better by the time conference championships roll around.”

Austin Peay hit the ground running following Christmas break at last week’s SIU Open, earning a runner-up team finish. The Lady Govs had athletes place first and second in the 60m hurdles (Amia Butler and Myiah Johnson), the 400m run (Kymmalett Ross and Terri Morris) and the 800m run (Jessica Gray and Molly Jordan) in Carbondale, with Austin Peay athletes totaling 27 personal-bests at the event.

Junior transfer Maikea Davis continues to impress early in her Austin Peay career. After breaking the school record in the 200m dash at the MT Christmas Invitational, she followed that with a runner-up finish at the SIU Open.

A yearly participant at the Niswonger since 2009, Austin Peay’s 2013 appearance was highlighted by the relay teams. The 4x400m team took runner-up honors, while the distance medley group placed seventh. Then-freshman Breigh Jones took third in the 400m dash final and is scheduled to appear in this year’s event as well.

The Lady Govs continue their indoor season at next week’s prestigious Gladstein Invitational, hosted by Indiana, January 24th-25th, in Bloomington, IN.
