APSU Provost Lecture Series features Geosciences professor Christopher Gentry, January 23rd

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University geosciences professor will present the next session of the Provost Lecture Series this week at APSU.

Dr. Christopher Gentry, associate professor of geography, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, January 23rd, in the Morgan University Center, Room 303.

His lecture will discuss the detection of co-seismic activity in the growth of trees in Montana.

While most studies have focused on the growth response of species adjacent to geologic faults, very few have examined the spatial variation of the response at distances from the disturbance.

In this study, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) cores were examined from four sites at a distance of up to 500 meters from the Red Canyon Fault, site of the 1959 Hebgen Lake Earthquake (7.5 Ms) in the Gallatin National Forest in southern Montana.

All sessions of the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

Gentry is in his sixth year at APSU and, in addition to his faculty position in the Department of Geosciences, serves as the director of the Office of Undergraduate Research. He earned his Ph.D. in 2008 and his M.A. in 2003 in geography from Indiana State University.

He obtained his B.A. in geosciences from Indiana University Southeast in 1999. His research interests include biogeography, dendrochronology, fire and landscape ecology and global change.

Sessions of the Provost Lecture Series can be viewed live here. Past lectures are available to view on iTunesU. Other sessions in the Provost Lecture Series also are planned for the academic year. All sessions are from 3:00pm-4:30pm in the MUC, Room 303.
