Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan to proclaim “National Wear Red Day”

City of ClarksvilleTonight at the regular Clarksville City Council meeting, Mayor Kim McMillan will proclaim Friday, February 7, 2014 “National Wear Red Day” in the City of Clarksville.

Cities across America will join the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” movement to recognize the importance of the ongoing fight against heart disease and stroke. According to the Association, more women than men are killed by heart disease and it is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined.

“Many people think that chest pain is the only indication that they might be having a heart attack,” said Mayor McMillan, “but we all need to be aware of the other symptoms such as pain in the back, the jaw, light-headedness, dizziness, heavy fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. Women are more likely to experience these other symptoms.”

Heart disease also affects women of all ages, races, sizes and activity levels. While there is no question that women with a family history of heart disease are more at risk, anyone can take steps to reduce these risks. Creating a plan that includes healthy nutrition, regular check-ups and exercise is a good first step.

“I know there are several businesses and groups in Clarksville that are recognizing ‘National Wear Red Day,’” said Mayor McMillan. “I think this program is an important reminder of what we all can do to take care of ourselves and create a healthier community.”
