The Govs, who were tied for eighth after Monday’s struggling pair of rounds, utilized their three-over to finish at 898, tying them with Radford.

South Carolina Aiken won the 17-team event with an 888 followed by Presbyterian (889), Charleston Southern (894) and VCU (895) on the 6,913-yard, par-72 Wexford Plantation course.

“We played a lot better today,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “We were able to put together four good scores today. We learned from yesterday and it showed today. Obviously, practicing on Saturday and then the practice round on Sunday and then playing yesterday, helped us play better.”

Marco Iten and Anthony Bradley, All-Ohio Valley Conference performers last spring, stepped up as senior leaders, the former shooting a 1-under 71 and Bradley a 72, a day after he struggled through one of his worst days as a Gov. Iten’s overall 221 left him in a fourth-place tie individually.

Austin Kramer shot a one-over 73,Tuesday, to finish with a 224, tying him for 17th overall. Fellow sophomore Chris Baker fired a final-round 75 for a three-round 225, tying him for 20th. Senior Trey Tarpley shot a final-round 83 to end with a 244.

“For the most part we were able to avoid the high (score) holes,” Kayden said. “We improved our short game and our shots off the tee. We also improved our focus. Monday was a wake-up call and I like the way our guys responded.

“We played liked the team I saw last fall. Our guys are in much better spirits today. We were able to keep that streak alive.”
