Tennessee Department of Transportation announces Pedestrian Safety Project in Clarksville

Tennessee Department of TransportationNashville, TN – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced plans to install signalized crosswalks at five intersections along State Route 12 (Ashland City Highway)/US 41A (Fort Campbell Boulevard).

Clarksville City Councilwoman Deanna McLaughlin contacted TDOT with safety concerns along Fort Campbell Boulevard after several incidents involving pedestrians.

From 2007 to 2011, six pedestrians have been killed on Fort Campbell Boulevard. TDOT launched a Road Safety Audit Review in June 2011 and has a developed a project designed to provide safer crossing areas for pedestrians.

“I am excited to be part of this exciting TDOT project announcement. It has been a true honor for me to work with TDOT and the safety planning team during the past year. They all truly care about the safety of our citizens,” said Councilwoman McLaughlin.

The Project Includes

Installing pedestrian warning signs in both directions along Fort Campbell Boulevard

Retrofitting five existing signalized intersections to include crosswalks, ADA compliant curb ramps, and countdown pedestrian signals. The five intersections are:

  • Providence Boulevard at Peachers Mill
  • Fort Campbell Boulevard at Lafayette/Sinclair
  • Fort Campbell Boulevard at Concord/West Concord
  • Fort Campbell Boulevard at Cunningham
  • Fort Campbell Boulevard at Quinn

The safety of all motorists is a top priority for TDOT and the City of Clarksville. TDOT feels strongly that this project will greatly improve pedestrians’ ability to safely cross several areas of this busy road in Clarksville.

TDOT has secured funding for the Pedestrian Safety Project and is currently finalizing the design plans. The project is expected to begin in the Fall of 2012.
