Eastern Kentucky Colonels vs. Austin Peay Lady Govs
Saturday, February 22nd, 2014 | 5:15pm
Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team (9-18, 6-8 OVC) celebrates Senior Day with a lot on the line when the Lady Govs host the Eastern Kentucky Colonels (14-9, 8-4 OVC), 5:15pm, Saturday in the first half of a doubleheader. With just two games remaining, Austin Peay finds itself in need of positive outcomes against the Colonels and UT Martin or for Morehead State, SIU Edwardsville and Southeast Missouri to suffer losses down the stretch in order to gain admittance to the OVC Tournament.
While Austin Peay has the edge entering the weekend, both Morehead State and Southeast Missouri have three games to play, with the Lady Govs down to their final two.
The Colonels lead the OVC in scoring defense at 65.5 points per game and allow a conference-low 37.6 percent shooting from the field. Senior Marie Carpenter is averaging 21.6 points per contest, ranking second in the OVC in three-point field goals made per game (3.0) and three-point field goal percentage (41.7 percent).
Saturday’s contest will be Austin Peay’s only battle against Eastern Kentucky this season. The Colonels have been pitted against Belmont all season for top spot in the OVC East, sitting a half-game behind the Bruins entering the weekend. The Lady Govs would need to snap a three-game losing streak against OVC East Division foes to knock off the Colonels.
Austin Peay Lady Govs
The Lady Govs are 4-3 on the road in OVC play this season while posting a 2-5 mark at home.
Four APSU players are averaging 10 or more points in conference play, with sophomore Tiasha Gray’s 15.1 mark leading the squad. Five APSU players have recorded a double-double this season, sophomore Jennifer Nwokocha leading APSU with five double-doubles.
Austin Peay has snapped a pair of 10-game losing streaks during the season – a 10-game overall losing streak was stopped with a win at Morehead State, January 13th, and a 10-game home OVC losing streak was ended with a January 25th win against Tennessee Tech.
Austin Peay’s non-conference strength of schedule (.544 win percentage) ranks 60th according to WBBState.com.
Eastern Kentucky Colonels
Eastern Kentucky and Belmont are locked in a battle for the top spot in the OVC’s East Division, with the Colonels currently sitting a half-game behind the Bruins.
The Colonels boast a stingy defense, allowing opponents to shoot an OVC-low 38.5 percent from the field and 27.1 percent from beyond the arc.
Marie Carpenter is second in OVC play in scoring, averaging 21.8 points per contest.
An Austin Peay Win Would
Snap a four-game losing streak. Snap a two-game losing streak to the Colonels… Be its first win against Eastern Kentucky in the Dunn Center since 2010… Make it 3-3 against the East Division. Make it 5-9 overall and 3-5 in OVC action at home this season. Improve Carrie Daniels’ record to 89-156 overall and 59-82 in OVC action. Make the Lady Govs 442-628 overall since 1976-77.
