The Govs broke into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Top-75 rankings this week, checking in at No. 72. It’s the first known ranking for the Govs and is a testament to their 5-1 start to the 2014 campaign.

Austin Peay accomplished much last week in the absence of senior No. 1 Jasmin Ademovic, who was sidelined due to an ankle injury. Without him, the Govs easily handled Western Kentucky (6-1, February 21st) and Southern Indiana (7-2, February 22nd), the latter ranked 22nd in Division II entering play.

Junior Aleksas Tverijonas, easing into the No. 2 role with Dimitar Ristovski’s move into No. 1, continued his sterling early-season play and remains unbeaten (6-0) in singles; he defeated Western Kentucky’s Alex Taranda (6-1, 6-1) and Southern Indiana’s Jack Joyce (6-7, 6-3, 6-0) and has won 24 of his last 25 dual singles matches dating back to the beginning of 2013.

The Govs dispatched Lindsey Wilson with a 5-2 result the last time the two squads met, March 3rd, 2013. Ristovski and Tverijonas, along with departed seniors Sean Bailey and John Storie, earned singles victories in that battle, while Ristovski and then-freshman Evan Borowski brought home one of the Govs two doubles victories.

Austin Peay will take a break – and hope to return with a healthy Ademovic – before opening Ohio Valley Conference play, March 15th, at Jacksonville State.
