Clarksville, TN – Despite taking the top two slots in singles play, Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team found itself on the wrong end of a 5-2 decision against Lindsey Wilson College, Saturday, at the Austin Peay Tennis Center.
The loss – Austin Peay’s first as a ranked squad – began with a resounding 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles by juniors Dimitar Ristovski and Iago Seffrin. However, freshmen James Mitchell and Manuel Montenegro fell to Edberg Espinoza and Pablo Vilches (8-7), while junior Aleksas Tverijonas and sophomore Evan Borowski fell to Ignacio Huertas and Raul Mendez (8-4).
The Govs dropped the doubles point for the third time already in 2014; Austin Peay did not suffer its third team doubles loss in 2013 until April 14th.
Singles play started equally promising – Ristovski dispatched Espinoza in a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory and Tverijonas defeated Fabricio Morales in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) for his seventh win in a row.
However, the Govs bottom three singles players each lost in straight sets. Seffrin, playing at No. 3 with senior Jasmin Ademovic still sidelined, pushed Mendez to a third set before falling 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
Austin Peay returns to action when the Govs open Ohio Valley Conference play against Jacksonville State, March 15th.
