Austin Peay ended the two-day tourney tied for seventh with Francis Marion at 917, falling from a fifth-place tie in the final round.

South Alabama rallied to win the tournament with a three-round 891, followed by No. 9 UAB (893) with Campbell (906) third,  Belmont (912) fourth, Jacksonville State fifth  (913) and Georgia Southern sixth (914).

“We had to count some high numbers—we had to count an 84 in both the first and second rounds and a 78 in the final round,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “We just didn’t adapt well at all to the slick greens—they played very fast and we have not played those type greens this spring.

“We had too many triples (bogeys) and quads. If we are going to be in the hunt for a top finish we have to make better decisions in order to play with the consistency needed to play good tournament golf.”

The Governors shot a 7-over 295 in Tuesday’s final round. But it was final nine holes of Tuesday’s second round that started the Govs slide. APSU finished that round at 310.

Seniors Marco Iten (74-79-73=223) and Anthony Bradley (77-72-78=227) finished tied for 12th and 15th, respectively, to lead APSU. Sophomore Chris Baker bounced back from an opening round 86 to shoot 75-71=232 to finish 31st. Senior Trey Tarpley (84-84-73) fired a 241 while sophomore Austin Kramer (77-85-84) was at 246.

“The effort is there, no question about,” Kayden said. “It is a matter of executing our shots better and making better decisions.

“The streak had to end sometime. To think you can finish in the Top 5 19 straight tournaments, usually against fields 15-17 teams, that’s pretty impressive. You have to give the guys a lot of credit. It is going to be tough to match it (in the future).”
