Kenwood Knights season ends with 57-41 loss to Brentwood Bruins

Brentwood, TN – Points off turnovers put the Kenwood Knights in a hole they could not dig out of. Out scored 18-6 in the final quarter, the Knights fell to the Brentwood Bruins at Brentwood High School, Wednesday, March 5th, 57-41.

After an explosive offensive start, defensive errors and turnovers gave control of the game from the Knights to the Bruins.

As the Knights defense faltered, their offense slowed to a crawl as well.

The Bruins took full advantage of the Knights misfortune scoring points off of turnovers and beating the Knights on the boards to get second chance scoring opportunities.

“When you turn the ball over, it is hard to make up for it. You can’t guard turnovers,“ Kenwood Knights head coach John Stigall said. “When we turned the ball over a lot in that second quarter it was tough.”

The Knights made six, 3-pointers on their way to 20 total points in the first quarter. But turnovers, let the Bruins score 20 points in the first quarter as well.

“It’s also tough when you make a bunch of threes , guys get confident shooting and they keep shooting. I think it was kind of fools gold early in the game,“ Stigall said. “We made a bunch of threes. We kept shooting the ball and didn’t attack the rim probably the way we should have.”

The Knights continued to turnover the ball in the second quarter allowing the Bruins to finish the first half with a 10-0 run and establish an 8-point lead, 32-24.

The Knights responded in the third quarter, cutting the Bruins lead to just three points, but that would be as close to the Bruins as they would get the rest of the game,

“They are really good with the ball. They are really solid,“ Stigall said. “They are not going to turn it over very much. So it’s hard to come from behind on a team like that.”

The Knights shot 2-of-6 from the field in the fourth quarter. Keith Dowlen led the team with 18 points including four, 3-pointers. Daniel Norl scored 14.

Jimario Rivers scored just 4 points, but also grabbed 5 boards and made 6 blocks in the game.

Andy Schumpert led the Bruins with 17 points. He was one of six Bruins players to score in the game. Jalen Lawson scored 9 and Grant Tiechman added 11 points.

The Bruins shot 7-of-10 from the field in the final quarter.

Although the loss was disappointing, the Knights still set a new record with their first sectional game. Coach Stigall expects to continue further in the future.

“We have got good young players on this team,“ Stigall said. “We are going to be back here and we are going to break through that door hopefully, very soon.”
