APSU Governors Baseball unable to corral Lipscomb Bisons in 14-6 loss at Raymond C. Hand Park

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team saw a lead evaporate in the final two innings and dropped a 14-6 decision to Lipscomb, Tuesday night, in nonconference action at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Austin Peay (6-9) grabbed a 6-4 lead thanks to a four-run fourth inning as they took advantage of three consecutive walks in the frame.

Catcher P.J. Torres pushed home the inning’s first run with a walk, designated hitter Kevin Corey followed with a sacrifice fly, a Lipscomb wild pitch allowed another run and center fielder Casey Bredlau capped the rally with a RBI single.

The Govs pitching staff had little trouble through seven innings, as five pitchers combined to hold the Bisons to four runs on four hits and one walk. However, things started to unravel in the eighth.

P.J. TorresLipscomb (10-8) waited out APSU reliever Ryan Quick and earned a pair of walks and a single to load the bases. The Govs turned to Tommy Hager, who retired the only batter he faced with one pitch. Austin Peay then handed the ball to Jared Carkuff, who got into a battle with Lipscomb shortstop Grant Massey. Massey would eventually win the battle with a two-run double to right center, tying the game.

Carkuff would escape the eighth with the game tied and returned in the ninth. He allowed a leadoff walk, which Lipscomb moved to second with a sacrifice bunt seeking to gain the lead. The need for small ball was rendered mute when designated hitter Griffin Moore hit a two-run home run that stayed just inside the right foul pole, giving Lipscomb a 8-6 lead.

Kevin CoreyLipscomb would keep the pressure on, and the Govs would use two more pitchers in the frame. By the time the dust settled, the Bisons struck for eight runs on five hits and five walks, finishing the inning with the 14-6 final score line.

Carkuff (0-2) was saddled for the loss after allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Austin Peay used 10 pitchers in the contest, five in the final two innings. After allowing just one walk through seven innings, the Govs would surrender seven in the final two innings – four of those eventually scoring.

Lipscomb reliever Jacob Knott (1-2) picked up the win after holding the Govs scoreless for 1.1 innings. The Bisons relief corps did not allow a run in the final five innings, including escaping a bases-loaded jam in the seventh that was Austin Peay biggest threat in that span.

First baseman Dre Gleason and Corey each had two hits to pace Austin Peay’s six-hit offensive attack. Corey finished 2-for-2 with two RBI while Torres added two RBI courtesy a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.

Lipscomb left fielder Tyson Ashcraft and second baseman Mike Korte each had three hits as part of a 14-hit outburst. Centerfielder Jonathan Allison and right fielder Drew Adams each had three RBI.

Austin Peay opens Ohio Valley Conference play when it hosts Eastern Illinois in a three-game set that begins with a 6:00pm, Friday contest.
