Tennessee Volunteers to face Iowa Hawkeyes in NCAA Tournament

UT VolsKnoxville, TN – The Tennessee basketball team faces Iowa in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Dayton, Ohio, Wednesday at UD Arena at 9:10pm (ET).

The Volunteers (21-12, 11-7 SEC) are vying for the No. 11 seed in the Midwest Region, which leads to Indianapolis, Ind.

The winner of Wednesday’s game meets No. 6 seed UMass on Friday in a second-round game in Raleigh, N.C.

The Vols are returning to the NCAA Tournament after a two-year absence. Tennessee has won five of its last six games and has held its last four opponents to an average of just 47.4 points per game.

The Hawkeyes (20-12, 9-9 Big Ten), guided by head coach Fran McCaffery, finished sixth in the Big Ten. Senior guard Roy Devyn Marble, a first-team All-Big Ten performer, leads Iowa in scoring with 17.3 points per game while shooting .364 from 3-point range.

This is Tennessee’s 20th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, its seventh in the past 10 years and its first under third-year head coach Cuonzo Martin. This is the first time the Vols will appear in the “First Four” and the first time they will meet Iowa in the “Big Dance.”

Tennessee trails its all-time series with Iowa 2-1. The Vols won the most recent meeting, posting an 80-68 victory December 29th, 2000, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Vols and Hawkeyes both competed at the Battle 4 Atlantis earlier this season in the Bahamas, but the teams did not meet.

Tennessee owns a 16-19 record in NCAA Tournament play. UT is 0-2 in two previous tournament appearances in Dayton (2001, 2009).
