After getting off to a strong start under calm winds, the Lady Govs could not maintain it as the conditions became windier. They shot an opening-round 318, Sunday, and finds themselves in 15th place after Day 1 in the tournament being played on the par-72, 6113-yard Juliette Falls Golf Resort layout.

“We look more like a golf team today,” Robson said. “We hit the ball well all day but we just struggled on the greens. The greens played slower because they haven’t been able to cut them because of the long winter.

Tala Mumford“The weather was gorgeous but the winds picked up this afternoon and it affected us from about third hole on.”

Seniors Tala Mumford (76) and Rachel Deaton (78) led the Govs while sophomore Jessica Cathey struggled to an 81 with freshmen Morgan Gardner (83) and Morgan Kauffman (86) also came in at plus-80.

“Tala played great today,” Robson said. “Rachel putted well but I can’t tell you how many putts she left on the edge (of the hole).

Rachel Deaton“Jessica struggled today with a little bit of everything—it just was one of those days, but you know she will bounce back.”

Three Florida schools—Daytona State (295), Florida Gulf Coast 298) and North Florida (299)—led the tournament. The Lady Govs’ Ohio Valley Conference foes Eastern Kentucky (301/t5th), Murray State (305/t7th) and host Morehead State (310/12th) also are among the field.

“We worked on a few things after the round and I think it will help us heading into tomorrow,” Robson said. “But it comes down mostly to us doing a better job on the greens.”
