Austin Peay State University Women’s Tennis defeats Belmont Bruins 4-2

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUNashville, TN – Playing singles first seemed to work well for Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team at Belmont, Saturday. With a threat of inclement weather in the air, the Lady Govs took their season’s first Ohio Valley Conference win, dropping the Bruins 4-2.

The win pushes Austin Peay to 4-7 overall and evens their record at 1-1 in OVC play. Belmont falls to 2-5, 0-2 in the OVC.

Moving down a slot in the order, senior Andra Cornea snapped a three-match losing streak with a dynamic three-set win (6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5) over Laura Van Eeckhoudt at No. 2 singles. In her first match at No. 1 this season, junior Ornella Di Salvo downed Sandra Kancheva with a 6-1, 6-1 decision.

Austin Peay’s talented freshman class clinched the win for the Lady Govs. Hannah Tatlock knocked off Abbie Mather (6-4, 7-5) at No. 5 for her season’s fifth win, tying her with Vanessa Tavares for second-most among Lady Govs.

With doubles play looming in the event of a tie, Isabela Jovanovic clinched the win for Austin Peay with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Ann Lauren Fiepke at No. 6. For Jovanovic, it was her first victory in a month and snapped a three-match losing streak.

The Lady Govs return to action with their first home match since March 1st when they host Tennessee State, 11:00am, Sunday.
