Austin Peay Governors

Rolando GautierAustin Peay will be incredibly busy until the Easter Holiday, as it is scheduled to play 17 games in the next 22 days. The Govs are 9-7 at Raymond C. Hand Park this season and have won 3 of their last 4 home outings. APSU is just 1-7 away from the friendly confines in 2014.

Right fielder Rolando Gautier moved into the leadoff spot, February 25th, against Eastern Michigan and has a hit in 16 of his 17 games (held hitless vs. Lipscomb) in that spot.

Two-way man Alex Robles (3B/P) ranks sixth among all OVC hitters and leads all freshmen with a .380 average; he has a 2-1 record and 3.82 ERA on the mound.

Cayce BredlauOutfielder Cayce Bredlau has broken out of his season-opening funk, with a hit in 9 of his last 11 outings (14-for-33, .424). Utility man Ridge Smith enters the midweek outing with 23 RBI, sixth-most among OVC hitters and most among freshmen this season; he also has reached base safely in 17 consecutive games.

Infielder Kevin Corey is batting .400 (12-for-30) during a stretch that has seen him start 8 of the Govs last 10 games.

Austin Peay has 74 extra-base hits this season and 35.4 percent of its hits have gone for extras, the highest such percentage among OVC teams. Eight freshmen have taken an at-bat this year and they have combined to hit .256 (132-for-515) and drive in 84 of the team’s 132 RBI.

The Govs defense has battled inconsistency with 56 errors this season (.940 fielding percentage), but has committed just 12 errors in the 9 games since OVC play started (.965 fielding percentage). Head coach Gary McClure is one of 28 active Division I coaches with 800 wins and he is APSU and the OVC’s all-time wins leader.

This season, Austin Peay was picked to finish 2nd in the OVC’s preseason poll behind Tennessee Tech. The Govs did not have a player selected to the preseason All-OVC squad; only senior catcher P.J. Torres returns after receiving All-OVC honors (2nd team) last season.

First Pitch

Alex RoblesFor the second consecutive weekend, Austin Peay will use three true freshmen in its weekend rotation. Right-hander Alex Robles has been the Govs stalwart starter, going 7 innings in each of his last four starts and posting a quality start in those four starts. He picked up the Govs first road win of 2014 – and his first OVC win – last weekend at Jacksonville State.

Left-hander Levi Primasing will look to bounce back from his first loss of 2014, suffered in a 5-inning outing at Jacksonville State last weekend. He has a 1-1 OVC record after winning his first league start against Eastern Illinois, March 15th.

Right-hander Caleb Powell reprises his Game 3 role for a second-straight week. He left last week’s start at Jacksonville State with a 4-1 lead but lasted just 4.1 innings – his longest outing of 2014.
