APSU Governors Football to tackle Fort Campbell’s Outdoor Recreation Challenge Course

Teamwork. Leadership. Trust. Qualities any coach looks for in his football players.

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUClarksville, TN – Kirby Cannon is just such a coach. In his second offseason at the helm of Austin Peay State University’s football program, Cannon is overseeing a program culture change that has claimed two winning seasons since the turn of the century.

As he has revamped recruiting, conditioning and other program aspects, so too has he attempted to instill the above qualities in his players.

With Austin Peay poised to play its annual Red-White Spring Game at Fort Campbell, Saturday, April 26th, the Govs’ football team will take part in team-building activities at Fort Campbell’s Outdoor Recreation Challenge Course, an obstacle course combining individual strength, problem-solving, leadership qualities and teamwork to illustrate how their combined individual skills can contribute to group success.

The challenge course is used by civilians and soldiers for a variety of reasons ranging from team-building to physical training to recreational therapy.  To navigate the course groups will work together while demonstrating leadership, listening, planning, problem solving and communication skills.

The Govs will be pared down to small seven-to-eight person groups and sent through each of five obstacles:

  • The Carolina T-Wall – A nearly 50-foot high wall with eight different faces, simulating realistic rock climbing.
  • The Alpine Tower – With its hourglass shape and 50-foot height, participants work in teams or by themselves to ascend the tower.
  • The Giant Swing – Attached to the Tower, groups use pulleys and cables to lift individuals before releasing them to a controlled fall/swing.
  • The Low Ropes Course – Team development course that requires participants to work together to cross.
  • The Odssey Course – An adult jungle gym featuring nets, zip lines, sliding platforms and mid-air cables, allowing individuals to work both by themselves and in a group setting.

Not only will the Govs have this opportunity, but select Austin Peay students as well will be able to join the players they support on Saturdays in this unique setting. Students that fill out and submit the attached form by Monday, April 1st, will be eligible for selection to join the Govs on the Challenge Course if they meet minimum physical requirements.
