Clarksville High Lady Wildcats Softball use small-ball to beat Northeast Lady Eagles

Clarksville High School WildcatsClarksville, TN – Clarksville High School’s softball team has gotten used to beating opponents by utilizing the home run this season, but March 31st versus Northeast High School it was playing the small-ball game that got the job done, with the Lady Wildcats defeating the Lady Eagles in their District 10-AAA matchup, 3-0.

Despite having several opportunities to score runs earlier in the game, Clarksville High (16-7, 5-0 10-AAA) found itself in a scoreless tie with the Lady Eagles heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when Peyton Wilson drew a walk to start the inning.

A sacrifice bunt by Clare Grady moved pinch runner Shelby Coakley to second base and a passed ball advanced her to third base and put her just 60 feet away from giving CHS the lead, with one out in the inning.

Next up would be Tiana Gray, who would get a bunt down – that turned into a single – that brought in Coakley with the go-head run.

Gray and Heather Norris would finish the game with two hits each for Clarksville High.

Katie Keen would then reach on a fielder’s choice when Northeast (5-5, 3-2 10-AAA) first baseman Alicia Veltri tried to get Gary out at second, but her throw was late and both runners were safe.

A wild pitch by Northeast starter Ericka Webster moved both runners up a base, setting up the Lady Wildcats to break the game open.

Again the bunt worked for CHS with Briana Soden scoring Gray on a sacrifice bunt and Katelyn Devers reaching on a bunt single to score Keen to give Clarksville High a 3-0 advantage.

Those runs would be more than enough for Norris, who picked up the complete-game, one-hit victory by sitting down the Lady Eagles in order in the seventh inning to seal away the victory.

Norris, along with giving up just one hit, struck out eight and walked four.

Northeast’s best chances to score against the Lady Wildcats came in the second and sixth innings.

In the second inning, Chealsey Pridgen opened the frame by getting to second base on a dropped fly ball by Keen in right field – but was stranded there – while in the sixth, the Lady Eagles got runners on second and third base via a walk to Webster to open the inning and single by Pridgen.

But Nikkia Reed couldn’t get a bunt down and eventually struck out followed by Michaela Pimpinella lining out to Gray to end the threat.

Both teams return to action April 1st, with Clarksville High traveling to Henry County High School and Northeast hosting Kenwood High School. Both games start at 5:30pm.
