Clarksville, TN – Freshman Amia Butler, of the Austin Peay State University track and field team, has been named this week’s Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.
Butler won the long jump at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold with a personal-best 5.77m (18’ 11.25”) leap on a cold, rainy afternoon in Nashville. The mark ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference and is the best by a Lady Govs since Sherlonda Johnson’s NCAA Regional-qualifying 5.99m leap at the 2006 OVC Championships.
In addition to her talents in the long jump, Butler took third in the 100m hurdles, posting a personal-best 14.29 time to augment freshman Myiah Johnson’s winning time of 14.25.The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:
- Junior Iago Seffrin, of the men’s tennis team, ran his win streak to five matches, dispatching foes from Tennessee Tech (G. Jain, 6-2, 7-5), Eastern Illinois (R. Skolik, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6) and SIU Edwardsville (N. Kuehn, 6-3, 6-4) last week.
- Senior Lauren de Castro, of the softball team, went 2-0 with two complete games against Southeast Missouri last weekend, including a career-high 11 in Saturday’s opener against the Redhawks.
- Freshman shortstop Garrett Copeland, of the baseball team, hit .389 (7-for-18) last week, with three multi-hit games to his credit. He scored twice in the second half of Wednesday’s doubleheader against Evansville and drove in two in the finale against Murray State.
