Club Sponsor at Clarksville’s Kenwood Middle School Stole Funds from Students

Tennessee ComptrollerNashville, TN – The former Beta Club sponsor from Kenwood Middle School in Clarksville used her position to take dues and field trip money for her own personal gain, an investigation by the Comptroller’s office has concluded.

The Beta Club is an organization that promotes high academic achievement and leadership skills among students.

The school’s former club sponsor, Priscilena Shearon, falsified collection records to conceal what she was doing. For membership dues, she kept a receipt book separate from the school’s official records.

The official records were only marked with authorized payment amounts, but Shearon actually collected greater amounts of money and issued receipts from the separate receipt book.

Investigators found that Shearon, who was also a science teacher at the school, misappropriated at least $2,289 over a two-year period.

The findings of the investigative report were shared with the local district attorney’s office. The Montgomery County Grand Jury recently indicted Shearon on one count of theft over $1,000.

“It’s reprehensible that anyone would take money intended to support children’s extracurricular activities at school,” Comptroller Justin P. Wilson said. “This case really illustrates the importance of being vigilant about money-handling practices, particularly where young children are involved. I commend our investigators and the local district attorney’s officials who worked on the case.”
