Austin Peay Sports Information
West Point, MS – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team is more than holding its own after Day 1 of the rain-delayed 2014 Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, being held at the Old Waverly Golf Club.
After rain hindered the tourney start by more than 1 ½ hours, Monday morning, the Governors were tied for sixth following Round 1 after shooting a 3-over 291 and were in sixth by themselves at 4-over par with three holes to play before darkness ended Round 2.The tourney will resume at 8:30am, Tuesday, on the par-72, 7,088-yard layout.
Ole Miss leads the tourney at 5-under, followed by South Alabama, which is at even par. First-round leader Cincinnati is 1-over followed by host Mississippi State and Florida at 2-over. Ten of the 15 teams entered are ranked in GolfStat’s Top 100.
“The guys have put us in good position for tomorrow against an outstanding field,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “If we are within the 6-8 shot range, we certainly have a shot.
“We had a great team performance in the first round, with three really good scores. We had to count a higher score (79) or we would have been right there. Through 15 we are 1-over in the second round. “
In the first round, seniors Anthony Bradley and Marco Iten led the way along with junior Tucker Wallace. Bradley shot a 2-under 70 while Iten and Waller were at 1-under. Trey Tarpley came in at 79 while Chris Baker shot an 80.
But the latter were playing solid in Round 2. Baker was at even par while Tarpley was 1-under.
“Trey just really had just one really bad hole in the first round but came back well this afternoon,” Kayden said. “Chris just got off to a terrible start—he was 8-over after six holes—but has played even par for the last 20 something holes. He really has pulled it back together.”
After a strong performance at Memphis last week, Wallace has continued his midseason surge, although he slipped to 3-over late in the second round. Bradley, after shooting 2-under in the first round, battled allergies in afternoon and slipped to 8-over with two holes to play.
“You know as a team you are playing a lot better when one of your best players isn’t going to count in a round and you still played a pretty solid round of golf,” Kayden said. “Hopefully, that is a good sign for the next couple of weeks.”
