Richmond, KY – A serious blow was dealt to Austin Peay State University women’s tennis teams hopes for securing a berth in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament when the Lady Govs dropped a 7-0 decision to Eastern Kentucky at the Coach Tom Higgins Tennis Courts, Sunday.
“We just weren’t really in this one,” said head coach Ross Brown. “They were too good at doubles and that set a tone. It’s not where you want to be at this point in the season, but at the same time we’ve got a couple of matches left.”
Brown singled out freshman Hannah Tatlock for her efforts Sunday; she fell to Milena Poffo 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Junior Vanessa Tavares also had a strong effort, falling 6-3, 7-5 to Melissa Gerritsen at No. 3.
“She fought hard against an upperclassman,” Brown said. “She’s one that will really be a factor for us down the road.”
In the midst of a five-match losing streak, Austin Peay has to recover quickly. Only two matches remain for the Lady Govs next week – they travel to UT Martin for a 2:00pm, April 12th match before concluding the regular season with a 1:00pm match at Southeast Missouri.
“It’s a tough pill for us to swallow but we’ve got to focus on what’s ahead of us,” Brown said. “We’ve got to come out, compete hard and play good tennis – if we do that, hopefully things will break our way.”
