The Lady Govs already have seen their share of success during the spring, starting back in February at Tusculum’s indoor tournament.

Austin Peay made a run to the finals of the 7-on-7 tournament, defeating squads from Young Harris, North Greeneville and Tusculum before falling to Lindsey Wilson in the championship.

Austin Peay found its way to the final again at the Western Kentucky Spring Tournament on March 22nd. The Lady Govs defeated Lindsey Wilson and Evansville and drew with Belmont en route to the finals in Bowling Green before dropping the championship match in a rematch with Lindsey Wilson.

“I think we’re more balanced offensively this year,” said head coach Kelley Guth. “We’re relying on more players to be a threat on the offensive end. That balance should make us a more dangerous offense because we’ll be harder to defend.”

Thanks to a 40-yard strike by Courtney Sheppard, the Lady Govs emerged victorious from their first full-scale scrimmage of the spring, defeating Evansville 1-0 on the road, March 31st.

“We didn’t have a lot of depth at Evansville,” Guth said. “Having so many girls who were able to go the distance and show that we’re already at a very high fitness level during the spring was very encouraging to me.”

In the spring’s only home outing, Austin Peay won its annual spring tournament, defeating squads from Lee and Bethel as well as teams comprised of Austin Peay soccer alumni.

The day also benefitted the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, with the soccer program selling t-shirts and collecting money to make a donation in the name of Emma Curran, the daughter of former Austin Peay athletes Pat (a football player) and Amanda (a soccer player, formerly McLean) Curran who was diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor in 2012.

Austin Peay’s final 11-on-11 spring event will be against Western Kentucky, April 17th, on its second visit to the WKU Soccer Complex. The Lady Govs played the Hilltoppers to a 1-1 draw in their last trip to Bowling Green, September 5th, 2013.

“The girls are working very hard,” Guth said. “They know how much of an opportunity this is to prepare for the fall.”
