Brentwood, TN – Austin Peay State University baseball freshman two-way man Alex Robles was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s adidas® Pitcher of the Week, Monday, after tossing a one-hit shutout at Belmont last weekend.
Robles, of Tucson, AZ, became the first Govs pitcher to throw a one-hitter since at least 1991 and the first to do so in a nine-inning contest (the other two were seven-inning affairs).
It was the first complete game by a Govs pitcher in 2014 and his longest outing of the season. In addition, Robles struck out a career high nine batters while facing just three more than the minimum (one hit and two walks surrendered).
Robles retired the first seven batters he faced in Thursday’s series opener at Belmont before surrendering a bloop single to right field. He would allow walks in both the fourth and sixth innings but worked around the free pass each time. Robles finished the game retiring the final 11 batters he faced.
It is the first weekly honor for Robles and second by a Govs player this season.
Freshman utility man Ridge Smith earned the league first 2014 Player of the Week award.
Austin Peay begins a five-game homestand when it hosts Middle Tennessee in a 6:00pm, Wednesday contest.
The Govs then greet Eastern Kentucky for a three-game OVC series beginning with a 6:00pm, Friday matchup, which will be Robles’ next start on the mound.
