The Lady Govs (19-30, 7-16 OVC), who dropped 4-3 and 3-2 (in eight innings) decisions on Saturday to EIU, were staked to an early 1-0 lead on Niya Sparks first collegiate home run – a towering blast over the center field fence off Panthers starter Stephanie Maday in the top of the second inning.

The score would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Panthers (37-13, 17-4 OVC) Reynae Hutchinson kept an inning alive with a two-out single and when came all the way around from first base to score the tying run on a double to left-center field by April Markowski.

Marissa LakeAustin Peay would have golden chances to retake the lead in both the eighth and ninth innings, but couldn’t come up with the big hit with runners in scoring position.

In the eighth inning, the Lady Govs loaded the bases – with one out — when Marissa Lake and Kayla Davidson got on with back-to-back singles, followed by Kristin Whitmire being hit by a pitch.

Lake led the Lady Govs with two hits – including a double.

That brought up Austin Peay’s leading hitter Lauren de Castro, but she hit into a fielder’s choice, with Lake being cut down at the plate for the second out of the inning, followed by Maday getting Sparks to strikeout to end the threat.

Chandler GrovesIn the ninth inning, Chandler Groves would get a possible scoring chance going for Austin Peay with a one-out single to right field.

Groves would move all the way around to third base when Markowski dropped a fly ball off the bat of Vinchinza DiBenedetto, giving the Lady Govs runners at the corners with one out.

But pinch hitter Christiana Gable grounded out to third and Lake went down swinging to end the inning.

After stranding a runner at third base themselves in the bottom of the eighth inning, Eastern Illinois wouldn’t let a second chance go by the boards in the ninth.

Carly Willert smacked an opposite-field triple into right field to start the inning for the Panthers, with EIU sending up pinch hitter Kylie Bennett to the plate.

Bennett would come through with a deep fly ball to right that would be caught by Amanda De Vries, but her throw wasn’t nearly in time, with Willert scampering home with the game-winning run.

Taking her second tough loss of the series was de Castro (12-14), as she scattered 10 hits, while walking one and striking out two. Maday (17-6) got the win, giving up nine hits and no walks, with nine strikeouts.

Austin Peay closes out the 2014 regular season next Saturday and Sunday as they host Tennessee Martin for a three-game OVC series at Cheryl Holt Field.

Sunday will also be Senior Day for Austin Peay, with the Lady Govs celebrating the careers of Davidson, Whitmire, de Castro, De Vries and Taylor Mills.
