Downtown Clarksville to have New Smart Parking Meters installed next week

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – Beginning next Tuesday, May 6th, 2014, the Clarksville Parking Authority will begin installation of new parking meters which will result in several new parking options for downtown visitors.

Each parking stall will be outfitted with a sensor that automatically resets when a car is parked in that space. The meters are set to offer the first hour of parking at no cost. The maximum time allowed in any parking stall will be three hours.

On these new meters, the maximum time cannot be extended. The new meters will accept payments made by coins and credit/debit cards.

The new meters will be installed in every current metered space. The diagonal spaces on Third Street, which have not been metered, will get new meters as well. While there will continue to be some free street parking in low demand areas, there will be no reduced fee meters anywhere in the downtown area.

There will be no changes to the fee structure at any of the surface lots or parking garages. Additionally, parking is always free in any metered space after 5:00pm and on weekends.

“The installation of these new meters comes primarily at the recommendation of the Two Rivers Company and the Parking Task Force the TRC formed last year,” said David Smith, Manager of the Parking Authority. “We continue to look for ways to meet the needs of our visitors and the downtown merchants. While these new meters will mean some changes, we believe they will address the needs identified by the TRC and Parking Task Force.”

During installation of the new meters, parking rates and times in the surface lots and garages will be enforced; however, the Parking Authority will not enforce parking regulations at the meters.

“We fully expect the installation to begin on Tuesday and be complete by Friday of next week,” said Mr. Smith. “We are also making every effort to minimize any inconvenience to visitors and businesses.”

Anyone with questions about the new meters or parking regulations should contact David Smith at 931.553.2436.
