Austin Peay State University Softball ends 2014 season with 6-3 win over UT Martin Skyhawks on Senior Day

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team closed out its 2014 regular season, May 4th at Cheryl Holt Field, by sending its five seniors out with a victory by defeating the University of Tennessee Martin, 6-3.

Seniors Kayla Davidson, Lauren de Castro, Amanda De Vries, Taylor Mills and Kristin Whitmire all had a hand in their final-game win for Austin Peay (20-32, 8-18 OVC), who also ends its regular season with a victory for the first time since downing Eastern Illinois University 6-5 to close out the 2009 season.

The Lady Govs would jump out early, taking advantage of two hits and a Skyhawks error to go up 1-0.

Kayla DavidsonMarissa Lake opened the game with a single just over the head of Tennessee Martin (27-25-1 14-10 OVC) shortstop Samantha McClure.

Davidson would follow with a single into left-center field, with Lake moving around to third base.

But the throw from center field got by third baseman Stephanie Nidiffer allowing Lake to score.

Kristin WhitmireAustin Peay would make it 2-0 in the second inning, with Whitmire opening the inning with a double and four batters later score on a single by Lake.

Lake and Whitmire both finished the contest with a team-best three hits.

The Skyhawks would cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the third inning, with Gabby Glenn scoring on a single by Nidiffer.

Lauren de CastroAustin Peay would respond with two runs in the bottom of the inning, to push its lead out to 4-1, on a two-run homer by Whitmire – which also brought in de Castro, who reached on an infield single.

The single by de Castro was her 50th hit of the season, making her the first player in school history to record three 50-hit seasons in a career.

Both teams added single runs in the fourth inning, with Tennessee Martin’s Kayla Wade scoring on a single by McClure, while APSU responded with a RBI single by Laurel Burroughs – scoring Rikki Arkansas – who reached with a single.

Amanda De VriesAustin Peay would score its sixth and final run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an infield groundout by De Vries, scoring Whitmire – who opened the inning with a single.

The Skyhawks tacked on its final run in the top of the sixth inning on a single by Renate Meckl that brought in Wade, who had opened the inning with a double off the left field fence.

Taylor MillsMills (2-3) got the win in relief, replacing de Castro in the top of the fourth inning, giving up five hits and one run over 3.1 innings of work – while walking two and striking out Wade on a called third strike to end the game.

Elizabeth Wiegand (11-7) took the loss for Tennessee Martin, pitching the first three innings, giving up six hits and four earned run, while walking one and striking out two.
