Clarksville, Tn – Austin Peay State University men’s basketball has announced the addition of Louisville (Kentucky) Trinity High School point guard Tre Ivory to its 2014-15 recruiting class.
The 5-10 Ivory will be following in the footsteps of his father, Willie, who played three seasons (1996-98) for the Governors.
The younger Ivory helped lead Trinity High School to a 30-5 record in 2013-14, averaging 10.6 points, 5.7 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game as the Shamrocks advanced to the Kentucky state semifinals.
“Tre is a solid point guard who is a pass-first, score-second guy,” APSU head coach Dave Loos said. “He is a winner who competes hard.
“You must guard him at the three line and he is athletic enough to get to the rim. Tre has done a lot of winning at Trinity and has been coached very well. He has played in a great program.
“I think he has the toughness to get it done on the defensive end and will be a good leader.”
Ivory is a two-time all-district selection along with all-region in 2014 and honorable mention All-State. He was named to the 2014 Kentucky State All-Tournament team after a standout state tourney performance that saw Trinity fall in the semifinals.
Previously, he was a two-time member of Louisville Invitational all-tournament team as well as the King of the Bluegrass All-Tournament team. He was chosen to Junior Kentucky All-Star team in 2013.
In an injury-interrupted season, Garmon played in 23 of 30 games, including a trio of starts. He averaged 1.7 points 1.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. On Feb. 19, he started and played 42 minutes against Morehead State, scored nine points, dishing out two assists and grabbing six rebounds. But his knee issues prevented him from playing two nights later against Eastern Kentucky.
Garmon recently underwent his second right knee surgery for a lateral meniscus tear. He had left meniscus tear surgery prior to his arrival. But it is the continuous swelling and accompanying arthritis from the previous surgeries that will keep the former Mineral Area Junior College transfer from competing any more.
“I hate it for Boonie,” Loos said. “He has a big heart and is a good competitor. His head and heart are willing but his knees are not. The shame is people really never got to see the Fred Garmon—there were glimpses—we signed last spring. He started having problems basically from the outset. I know how frustrating it was for him because he wanted to contribute so badly.
“Fred is still going to be a part of it and I am glad we can continue to support him. He is a strong student who will graduate and will do well in life.”
With the addition of Ivory, the Govs recruiting class now stands at six: two junior college transfers—Kahlil Davis, who will have two seasons of eligibility, and 6-8 forward Assane Diop, of Cloud County Community College, who will have three seasons remaining; and four freshmen, 6-3 guard Josh Robinson (St. Mary’s High School, St. Louis, Mo.), 6-4 guard Domas Budrys (Krentinga, Lithuania/Parkview High School, Lincoln, Neb.) and 6-4 guard Chris Porter-Bunton (Warren Central High School, Bowling Green, Ky.) and the 5-10 Ivory.
In addition, Jeremy Purvis, who started 12 games in 2012-13 after walking on but sat out last season, will be placed on scholarship for the 2014-15 season. He is expected to help provide depth at the point guard position.
