Kevin Kane leads Rossview High past Clarksville High to win Region 5-AAA baseball title

Rossview High School HawksClarksville, TN – Rossview High School’s Kevin Kane pitched and hit his way into the programs baseball lore on May 15th, as he pitched and hit the Hawks past District 10-AAA regular-season and tournament champion Clarksville High School to win the school’s first Region 5-AAA title, 5-1.

With the victory, Rossview (24-12-1) will host Ravenwood High School May 16th in one half of the TSSAA Sectional tournament, while Clarksville High will travel to Brentwood High School in the other Sectional matchup. Both games start at 7:00pm.

On the mound, Kane limited the Wildcats (29-6) to five hits – one after the third inning — and one run in seven inning of work, while striking out nine and walking one.

“That was definitely his best pitching performance in the biggest game of the year,” Rossview coach Jason Rice said. “He had command of two pitches, battled all night and showed that we’re team that was guys step up when they need too.”

The only inning where Clarksville High was able to do anything against Kane was the bottom of the second inning, where they tallied three of their five hits on the night.

Donny Everett and Ryan Streeter opened the inning with back-to-back singles, but Kane got the next two CHS hitters out before Keandre Sadler singled into right field to bring in Everett to cut the Rossview lead to 2-1.

“Tonight was I was really able to locate my fastballs on both sides of the plate,” Kane said. “Then I was able to mix in my changeup to keep them off balance, but it started with locating the fastball.”

Kane would also have the big turning-point hit at the plate in the top of the fourth inning, as he launched a two-run homer over the left-field fence to extend the Rossview lead out to 4-1 against Wildcats starter Teal Young (3-3).

“That home run was the only real mistake that Teal made tonight,” Clarksville High coach Brian Hetland said. “He pitched a good ball game, as a freshman he came out and attacked the zone and kept us in the game, we just didn’t do anything at the plate to get back into the game.

“I’m very disappointed in our offense and we didn’t do what it took to get us here. We were out of kilter at the plate and we have to get it better and be more competitive in our at bats one through nine.”

Rossview had opened the night’s scoring with two runs in the top of the second inning with Bradley Wilson opening the inning with a single and move to third base an out later on a double by Austin Davis.

Young was able to get the second out of the inning, but Collin Baber beat out an infield single to bring in Wilson with the first run of the game.

Rice would also send Davis home, trying to catch the Wildcats defense out guard, but Everett threw home in plenty of time to get Davis, but when CHS catcher Gabe Bowling applied the tag to Davis he dropped the ball and Davis was safe to make it 2-0.

Rossview’s final run of the game came in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Dillon Johnson, scoring Wesley Boone.

Johnson and Truman Brown had two hits each for Rossview.
