Fort Campbell MWR’s Spectacular Saturday helps BACH reach out to Community

2014 Fort Campbell Week of the EaglesFort Campbell, KY – On Saturday Fort Campbell MWR organized Spectacular Saturday, a massive event for the soldiers and their family’s as part of the 2014 Week of the Eagles. The 2014 Week of the Eagle Community Fair featured static displays with some of the 101st Airborne Division’s tactical equipment including helicopters like the Chinook, Apache, Blackhawk, Kiowa and land vehicles including an HMMWV and an MRAP! For the Kids or young at heart there were zip-lines, and over a dozen inflatables. The Week of the Eagles Car show, and Blanchfield Army Community Hospital’s Community Health Fair were also part of this mega event. It was a lot of fun for everyone who attended.

“Blanchfield Army community Hospital is starting their 26 Week Performance Triad Health Challenge,” said Laura Boyd, Public Affairs Officer for Blachfield Army Community Hospital. “The performance Triad is the Army Surgeon General’s way to promote sleep, activity, and nutrition to help ensure more healthy soldiers.”

She then spoke a bit about the community health fair, “We had an array of booths here today. Five wellness classes, as well as five fitness classes ranging from sleep, activity, and nutrition of course and performance psychology with the Comprehensive Soldier & Family Fitness (CSF2) Program were held throughout the day.”

They were also signing up folks for RelayHealth, the Army secure email messaging system; and taking mammogram screening appointments as well.

“We had a little bit of everything here today,” she said. “We really want individuals to understand how important wellness is both for their community, and their individual health. The reception we have received has been fantastic. The people who came by today really seemed to appreciate and value the information that they received. So we are grateful for everyone who took time to come out!”

She thanked Fort Campbell’s MWR program for all that they did to make the community health fair possible, “We could not have done this without Fort Campbell’s MWR. We appreciate them allowing us to be part of their Spectacular Saturday festivities! They provided the draw that we needed to get the information out to as many soldiers and the families as possible.”

John Myers, was on hand representing the Comprehensive Soldier & Family Fitness Program. He Manages the program on Fort Campbell for the U.S. Army. “I am with the Comprehensive Soldier & Family Fitness Program here on Fort Campbell. We have a training center here where we do resilience and performance enhancement training.”

When asked what he wanted soldiers to take from them being at the community health fair, Myers responded, “We’re hoping that the soldiers will take back to the unit that we are here on post, and that they can come by and we can help them with their training. The soldiers have to do resilience training anyway, so we help provide a kind of quality assurance for their instructors. We also do performance enhancement training so we kind of help soldiers do what they do, better!”

Kimberly Lewis is one of the beneficiaries of the Army’s focus on ensuring that the soldiers and the families are as healthy as possible. “I had gastric bypass surgery two years ago. I started out at about 309 pounds at my heaviest before surgery, and I am between 155-160 today,” she said.

Lewis had just left a booth that was providing healthy recipes to the community health fair attendees. “What got me talking with her was the recipes. They are high in protein and low in sugar which is what we as gastric bypass patients eat. It is usually a struggle to find things that I can actually eat when I go out, and I am looking forward to sharing the recipes that I was given today with the other members of my support group.”

She rates the healthcare provided to soldiers and the family on Fort Campbell as excellent, “We actually do use the healthcare system that we have. Because it is quite good really, and we figure that while he still in the Army, we might as well take full advantage of having it available.”

Her husband Charles Lewis who is serving with 2nd Brigade Combat Team agrees, “I am very proud of my wife. I supported her all the way through. If it wasn’t for the Army’s Medical System backing her up, I don’t think that she would’ve been able to accomplish all that she has been able to.”

He loves the fact that BACH is working so hard to reach the soldiers and their families, “They are working hard to get information out to the people. Most of these new soldiers don’t know about many of the programs that are out there to help them and their families. BACH hosting outreach events like the community health fair really helps the soldiers find out what is available to them, and that is awesome.”
