Nashville Sounds end Homestand with 3-2 loss to Omaha Storm Chasers

Hunter Morris Belts Team-Leading 6th Homer Of Year For Nashville

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds closed out their nine-game homestand on the short end of a 3-2 loss to the Omaha Storm Chasers on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium.

Nashville (26-22) finished its homestand with a 5-4 record and won its 16-game season series against Omaha, 9-7. Five of the Sounds’ last seven defeats have been one-run losses.

After Omaha took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Johnnie Lowe, Sounds right fielder Caleb Gindl (2-for-4) evened the score in the home half of the frame when he belted veteran Brett Tomko’s 2-0 offering over the left-center wall for his third home run of the season.

The Storm Chasers regained the lead in the fourth when Matt Fields singled and later scored on a Jesus Flores RBI single, which ended Lowe’s night.

Sounds reliever Jeremy Jeffress had an outstanding outing, striking out seven of his 10 batters faced during his 2 2/3 scoreless innings of work.

First baseman Hunter Morris (2-for-4) leveled the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when he belted a one-out solo homer to right off Omaha reliever Justin Marks. The blast was the slugger’s team-leading sixth of the year.

Omaha took its third lead of the night in the top of the eighth with an unearned run against Brent Leach (2-1). Melky Mesa led off with a double off the center field batter’s eye, moved to third on an errant pickoff throw by Leach, and raced home on Brian Bocock’s sacrifice fly to center to give the visitors a 3-2 advantage.

Taylor Green singled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth against Spencer Patton to put the potential tying run on base for Nashville. However, Patton induced a game-ending popout from pinch-hitter Sean Halton to quell the threat and pick up his eighth save of the year.

The Sounds travel to New Orleans tomorrow for a four-game series against the division-rival Zephyrs before returning to Music City on Tuesday to begin another homestand. Top prospect Jimmy Nelson (5-1, 1.71) will make the start in Friday night’s 7:00pm series opener in the Big Easy. He’ll face Zephyrs righty Elih Villanueva (4-2, 2.68).
