Clarksville, TN – The Mickey Fisher Memorial Golf Tournament, or “Big Fish,” is taking sponsorships and entries for the July 11th-12th fundraiser at Cole Park Golf Course at Fort Campbell.
The tournament was established in 2010 as an endowment to benefit dependents of soldiers at Fort Campbell, with a scholarship to attend Austin Peay State University.
Mickey Fisher was a native Clarksvillian. He was an outstanding athlete playing on both the Clarksville High School basketball and golf teams. He furthered his education at Austin Peay State University and added to his sports legacy on their basketball court.
One of Mickey’s greatest achievements, however, was in the teaching arena. Fort Campbell School System was blessed to have Mickey on staff for thirty-three years both as a teacher and coach.Mickey taught much more than classroom facts or plays on the basketball court, he taught life lessons that involved making sound, ethical choices and living a life beneficial to others as well as oneself. Mickey died suddenly at the end of the summer in 2009, only weeks after retiring.
Gen. Richard A. Cody, US Army (ret.), in an e-mail to Mickey’s wife, Mary, stated: “Mickey was one of my ‘favorites’ – a coach who not only taught his players the game- but more importantly taught them discipline, morals and ethics – life-long lessons. Again, I am very sorry that Mickey has passed- but he leaves a legacy of great students and athletes who are much better citizens and people for having been taught by Mickey.”
Scholarship recipients will be chosen from eligible applicants meeting the criteria based on financial need in addition to scholastic achievement and potential for academic success at APSU. If there are no dependents of wounded or fallen soldiers to qualify in a given year then next priority would go to graduates of Fort Campbell High School who plan to pursue a career in teaching and coaching.
