APSU Governors Golf releases fall schedule

Austin Peay State University Sports Information

Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUClarksville, TN – It will be a mixture of some familiar tournaments and different ones greeting a much younger Austin Peay State University men’s golf team this fall.

The Govs, who lost four-year starters Marco Iten and Anthony Bradley along with four-season contributor Trey Tarpley among others, potentially could feature an extremely young lineup, although rising senior Tucker Wallace and juniors Chris Baker and Austin Kramer will offer much experience.

APSU junior Cleve Guinn along with sophomore Erik Hedberg also are returning and to date APSU coach Kirk Kayden has signed three freshmen for 2014-15

To open the season Austin Peay will participate for the first time in the prestigious Golfweek Conference Challenge, September 14th-16th, at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa. This will be the sixth time for the Golfweek-sponsored event.

A week later (September 22nd-23rd), the Governors will remain north. In fact, Kayden will return to his old stomping ground in Toledo, Ohio, as APSU will play in the Inverness Intercollegiate at the fabled Inverness Club, which has hosted four U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, two U.S. Senior Opens, one U.S. Amateur and the 2009 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. Kayden, a 1997 Toledo graduate, is extremely familiar with the course.

Then the Governors will come back closer to home for their final three tournaments. In fact, all three will be in Kentucky. The first will be Sept. 29th-30th, when APSU heads to Louisville to play in the Cardinal Intercollegiate. The Govs finished third in a 15-team field a year ago.

After nearly a two-week break from competition, the Governors will return in a short jaunt down the road, October 13th-14th, to Bowling Green for the Kenny Perry Invitational, to be played at The Club at Olde Stone. In 2012, the Govs were participants in the Inaugural WKU/Kenny Perry Invitational.

APSU then will close out Fall 2014 by playing host to the 14th-Annual F&M Bank/APSU Intercollegiate, October 20th-21st, at the Links at Novadell.

“Because of last year’s solid play we were able to get some great invites for the fall portion of our schedule,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “It will be a big challenge for our new team against some great competition on some phenomenal golf courses.

“These five tournaments represent the respect that we are getting in the college golf community and it is a big credit to out student-athletes.”
