Nashville Returns to First Place With Victory

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – Behind an early offensive outburst and a solid start from Michael Blazek, the Nashville Sounds (54-50) picked up a 7-5 win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Greer Stadium on Tuesday night. The victory, coupled with a 1-0 New Orleans Zephyrs loss to the Iowa Cubs, moved the Sounds back into first place in the American Conference Southern Division.

Nashville took a 3-0 advantage off of Sky Sox starter Brian Burres in the top of the first thanks to a string of RBI singles by Jason Rogers, Matt Clark and Hector Gomez. The opening strike and win improves the Sounds’ record when scoring first at Greer Stadium to 26-2.

Rogers went 2-for-3 in the contest, giving him hits in nine of his last 12 starts with nine RBIs in that span. Gomez’s impressive July continued as well, as his 1-for-3 performance, which also included a sacrifice fly in the third inning, gives him hits in 16 of 19 games played this month.

Sounds starter Michael Blazek dealt four scoreless innings, striking out five while allowing just three hits. He was followed by Jose De La Torre (2-1), who threw two innings of scoreless relief to pick up his second win of the year.

Nashville added an insurance run in the top of the seventh after Sean Halton scored Eugenio Velez on a fielder’s choice.

It took until the top of the eighth for the Sky Sox to get on the board, as they cut Nashville’s lead to 5-2 after a Matt McBride RBI single and an error by Gomez off of Sounds reliever Alfredo Figaro. Brent Leach and Rob Wooten, however, combined to get out of the inning with the Sounds still holding a comfortable margin.

Matt Pagnozzi delivered a crushing blow in the bottom of the eighth when he hit a two-run home run over the left field wall, his 10th of the season.

Colorado Springs did not go down without a fight, scoring three runs off of Wooten in the top of the ninth and putting the winning run on base before Dustin Molleken came in to get the final out and pick up his third save of the year

The series between the Sounds and Sky Sox rolls along with the next game scheduled for Wednesday at 7:05pm. Sounds RHP Ariel Pena (6-6, 4.62) will take to the bump opposite Sky Sox RHP Mike McClendon (2-1, 3.30).
