Nashville Sounds win one lose one against Colorado Springs Sky Sox Friday Night

Nashville SoundsColorado Springs, CO  The first-place Nashville Sounds (61-53) split their doubleheader with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Friday night at Security Service Field, winning 2-1 with a rally in the opener before getting blanked, 1-0, in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Sounds put together a late rally that was capped off by Jason Rogers’ game-winning home run to defeat the Sky Sox, 2-1.

Rogers’ solo home run, his fourth of the season and first on the road, was just fair over the left-field wall and broke the 1-1 tie.

The team was able to plate the game-tying run in the 6th inning, when Pete Orr grounded into a force out at second with the bases loaded that scored Hector Gomez, 2-for-4, from third.

The Sounds offense had plenty of chances to score with baserunners in every inning, but the team finished 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.

Sounds starter Taylor Jungmann got off to a slow start, walking his first three batters, and Sky Sox outfielder Matt McBride made him pay by driving a double off the wall in left field to give Colorado Springs a 1-0 lead in the game’s initial frame.

Jungmann settled in, retiring a stretch of eight consecutive batters from the 2nd to 4th inning to keep the Sounds in the game. The right-hander limited the Sky Sox to two hits in five innings of work before reliever Arcenio Leon (1-2) entered the game.

Leon picked up the win in his clean inning of work, while closer Rob Wooten had to work out of a 7th inning that started with two runners in scoring position and no outs. Wooten retired his three with a groundout and two bases-loaded strikeouts for his 8th save of the season.

The nightcap was a complete flip from the opener, as the Sounds fell victim to a late rally, losing in walk-off fashion to the Sky Sox, 1-0.

Neither team was able to push a run across in the first six innings. Sounds starter Kyle Heckathorn provided another solid outing in a spot start, pitching three shutout innings and allowing only three hits. Jose De La Torre followed with two innings of scoreless relief, giving him six straight appearances without allowing a run.

The Sounds had a chance to open the scoring when Sean Halton hit a one-out triple in the top of the 2nd, but he would be stranded to keep the game scoreless. Halton was the only Sounds player to record multiple hits in the game.

The Nashville found itself in business again in the top of the 5th when Hector Gomez and Shawn Zarraga led off the inning with walks. Sky Sox reliever Juan Nicasio benefitted from a stroke of luck when Kevin Mattison followed with a hard line drive that resulted in a double play to end the threat.

Reliever Alfredo Figaro ran into trouble in the bottom of the 7th, allowing a pair of singles to lead off the inning. After recording outs on a sacrifice bunt and strikeout, Figaro walked Rafael Ynoa intentionally to set up a force at any base. Christian Adames then became the hero, coming up with the big hit to seal a loss for Nashville.

The Sounds will now begin the second half of their road trip Saturday night in New Orleans, with RHP Michael Blazek (1-4, 4.15) taking the hill for Nashville against Zephyrs RHP Anthony DeSclafani (2-2, 3.24). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00pm.
