Nashville’s Ariel Pena Goes Seven Innings In Loss

Nashville SoundsMetairie, LA – The first-place Nashville Sounds (62-55) were held without a run Monday night at Zephyr Field in their 4-0 loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs. It marks the team’s sixth shutout loss of the season.

The Zephyrs took the lead early on, scoring a run in the bottom of the 1st inning courtesy of Justin Bour’s low liner into right field that brought in Austin Wates from third base.

Zephyrs right fielder Brian Bogusevic increased New Orleans’ lead to two with his RBI double in the 4th inning, which followed Bour’s leadoff double.

In the 6th inning, the Z’s made it a 4-0 lead over Nashville with a Ed Lucas sacrifice fly and Zack Cox’s RBI single.

Sounds starting pitcher Ariel Pena (8-7) allowed all four Zephyrs runs during his seven innings of work from the hill to pick up his seventh loss of the season. The right-hander surrendered seven hits and issued three walks, but also fired seven strikeouts.

Reliever Kyle Heckathorn stepped in to deliver a spotless 8th inning, fanning one Zephyr.

Offensively, three Sounds batters turned in two-hit nights to account for the team’s six hits on the night: Logan Schafer, Irving Falu, and Hector Gomez.

New Orleans starter Brad Penny (2-2) worked six scoreless frames, limiting the Sounds to three hits, for his second win on the year.

The Sounds will look to level the series with New Orleans on Tuesday night by sending RHP Donovan Hand (1-6, 4.66) to the hill opposite the Zephyrs’ LHP Elih Villanueva (9-7, 3.73). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm.
