Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUClarksville, TN – A different Austin Peay State University football team was evident after the first day of practice, Tuesday morning, as the Governors underwent their first official 2014 practice.

Practicing in shorts in upper-80s temperatures, the Governors practiced for two hours on the east end of Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

Crispness was noted on both sides of the football with the new no-huddle offense continuing to evolve as first-year quarterback Trey Taylor looked more comfortable with his reads.

Head coach Kirby Cannon and offensive coordinator Josh Richards ran the no-huddle during their Missouri S&T days.

“A vastly different football team—a much-improved team,” APSU coach Kirby Cannon said. “Another year of strength and conditioning is very evident. The older guys have a better understanding of what we’re doing and we have some really good-looking freshmen.”

Some 90 Governors went through the first day of practice after meetings and conditioning, Monday. The Governors return 40 lettermen, with eight being starters. Freshmen populate nearly half of the 90-man roster. In other words, competition could be wide open for several positions

Wide receiver Jamaar Embry also was impressed by his teammates’ offseason work. “We picked up where we left off in the spring,” he said. “The older guys came out with great intensity and the young guys picked up on that.”
