Late touchdown lifts Kenwood past Christian County, West Creek earns tie

Kenwood High SchoolClarksville, TN – Kenwood High School’s football team put together a late scoring drive, August 16th night at the Boarder Wars Football Jamboree, to defeat Christian County (KY) High School, 7-0, while host school West Creek High School played to a 0-0 draw versus Christian County.

In the other two match-ups in the jamboree, Madisonville-North Hopkins defeated Northwest High School 7-0, while also defeating Montgomery Central High School, 28-0.

With a little over six minutes left in their two-quarter scrimmage, Kenwood would start what would be their game-winning drive on their own three-yard line following a great kick by the Christian County punter – pinning the Knights deep in their own territory.

But following a three-yard run by Antwuan Branch, to start the drive, Kenwood would get back-to-back 20-plus yard plays – a 24-yard run by James Boykin and a 23-yard pass play from Malcom Perry to Coreon Jackson – plus a 15-yard personal foul facemask call on Jackson’s catch, to put the Knights at the Colonels 32-yard line.

Josh Lewis would get the next two carries, including a 20-yard dash through the heart of the Christian County defense to set up a first-and-goal scoring chance at the eight yard-line.

Lewis would lead Kenwood with 46 yards rushing on five carries.

It would take two tries, but A.J. Richardson went in from two yards out, with 1:50 left, to put the Knights up 6-0 – with Kalena Boykin kicking the extra point – for the 7-0 final margin.

Defensively, Kenwood limited Christian County to just 23 total yards in the two quarters of play.

Kenwood opens the regular season at 7:00pm, on August 22nd at Independence High School.

West Creek 0, Christian County (KY) 0

Despite ending in a 0-0 tie, both West Creek and Christian County had scoring chances inside the red zone to put points on the scoreboard – including the Colonels getting to the three-yard line in the finals seconds.

In looked like the game was going to end in the 0-0 draw without much fan fair at the end with Christian County starting their final drive at their own 32-yard line with 2:33 left in the game and only having 33 yards of total offense up to that point.

But two big pass plays – including a 47-yard bomb – put the ball at the Coyotes three, with less than 30 seconds left.

That is where some miscommunication happened for the Colonels, with the Christian County quarterback having trouble getting a play signaled in from the sideline and the game clock ran out before they could get a snap off for a possible winning score.

West Creek’s scoring opportunity came at the end of the first quarter, as they used six plays to move the ball from their own 40-yard line down to the Christian County 13, but Knight’s quarterback Jordan Justice threw three straight incomplete passes to set up a fourth-down and 10 at the 13-yard line.

West Creek’s field goal unit came on the field, but the Coyotes coaches called a timeout and decided to go for it on fourth down.

The Coyotes got the matchup they wanted, but Justice’s pass was dropped in the end zone by the intended receiver to keep the game scoreless.

TyRee Townsend would lead the Knights rushers with 32 yards on six carries, while Justice finished the game going 4-for-12 passing for 27 yards.

West Creek opens its regular season at 7:00pm, on August 22nd at Todd County (KY) High School.

Madisonville-North Hopkins (KY) 7, Northwest 0

Northwest fell victim to some miscommunication between the game officials and their coaching staff on the sidelines that led to Madisonville-North Hopkins scoring the only points of their match-up versus the Vikings.

Midway through the first quarter Northwest was forced to punt on the Maroons 45-yard line, getting the ball down to the visitors’ 27-yard line – but a North Hopkins defender ran into the Vikings punter, drawing a flag.

This is where things went wrong for Northwest, as the Vikings coaching staff thought they were going to have to kick again with the call being running into the kicker – a five-yard penalty – and not the personal foul ruffing the kicker, which would have given them the ball back.

But the officials put the ball down at the 27 and before Northwest could react, the Maroons ran a play with Ryan Bowman racing 73 yards for the touchdown against what was the Northwest punt team.

First-year Northwest head coach Vernon Wright went out to almost mid-field to argue that they thought they had to punt again and North Hopkins scored on what was for the most part two offensive squads on the field at the same time, but his argument fell on deaf ears and the play stood and proved to be the difference in the contest.

Northwest opens its regular season at 7:00pm, on August 22nd, as they travel to Stewart County High School.

Big plays were the undoing for Montgomery Central in their loss to North Hopkins, as the Indians gave up two touchdown runs of 63- and 33-yards; while also giving up two touchdown pass-plays of 62- and 55-yards.

The first touchdown came just four plays into the game, with Maroons quarterback T.J Phaup connecting with Bowman for a 62-yard scoring play to make it 7-0.

After having to punt on its first possession, Montgomery Central got the ball back on the North Hopkins side of the field, with Tyler Sneed picking off Phaup’s pass attempt and giving the Indians the ball at the Maroons 42-yard line.

Montgomery Central would get as close as the 27-yard line, before three straight losses on rushing attempts forced the Indians to punt the ball back to North Hopkins.

It would be all Maroons after that, as they scored on three of their next four drives, with Bowman scoring twice on the ground and Ivonta White on a pass play.

Montgomery Central will host Clarksville Academy at 7:00pm, on August 21st to open their regular-season schedule.
