Brentwood, TN – After graduating four seniors from last season’s sixth-place squad, Austin Peay State University women’s cross country team was picked to finish seventh in the annual preseason coaches poll, released Wednesday.
With senior Jessica Gray and sophomore Molly Jordan back to lead this year’s squad, the Lady Govs find themselves squarely in the middle of the preseason prognostication with 60 points, one point behind SIU Edwardsville.Morehead State (53 points), Jacksonville State (50), Tennessee Tech (31), UT Martin (21) and Tennessee State (12) were tabbed to finish behind the Lady Govs in the 12-team field.
Two-time defending champion Eastern Kentucky was picked to make it three straight, picking up 11 first-place votes and 121 points. Belmont secured the other first-place vote and 110 points, earning a second-place pick. Eastern Illinois (99 points), Southeast Missouri (94) and Murray State (80) rounded out the top five.
The Lady Govs kick off the 2014 season Friday, August 29th at the Belmont Opener. The six-meet schedule includes Austin Peay’s first home meet since 2006, September 19th, and culminates in the 2014 OVC Championships in Oxford, AL, hosted by Jacksonville State.
