Nashville, TN – Rossview High School’s football team came out like a ball of fire Friday night, August 22nd, in getting out to a quick 14-0 lead, but turnovers help Hillsboro High School to score 34 straight unanswered points against the Hawks in posting a 41-27 come-from-behind victory.
The Hawks (0-1) scored the first two times they had the ball, needing only 13 yards on their first drive to find the end zone after getting a hand on a punt deep in the Burros end of the field and then recovering a Hillsboro (1-0) fumble near midfield to start their second drive.
Tristin Luke scored the first touchdown for Rossview, after the blocked punt, going in from four yards out with 8:30 remaining in the first quarter to put the Hawks up 7-0.Luke would lead Rossview with 137 yards rushing on 23 carries.
Hillsboro would drive the ball out to midfield, but Deandre Alexander fumbled the ball just past the 50-yard line with Rossview defender Jordan Gold recovered the ball at the Hawks’ 46-yard line.
Rossview would march right down the field, going 54 yards on six plays, capped by a two-yard touchdown by Bryson Harris to put the Hawks up 14-0 with 6:26 left in the opening quarter.
The Hawks would force the second Burros turnover of the night on Hillsboro’s next possession, this time an interception by Christian Christenson of a Michael Hughes pass at the Rossview 12-yard line.
But this is where the tide started to turn Hillsboro’s way, as the Hawks weren’t able to move the ball and set up to punt the ball from their own 11.
But the Hawks tried a pass off a fake punt attempt by Christenson, but the pass was picked off by James Crutcher, setting the Burros up at the Rossview four-yard line.
Hillsboro would cash in on the short field, needing three plays to score their first touchdown of the night – a one-yard dive by Hughes – cut the Hawks lead down to 14-7.
The Hawks were able to get one first down to get out of the shadow of their end zone, but an interception of a Charles Talleyrand pass by Hillsboro’s Malique Fleming was returned 23 yards for a touchdown, tying the game 14-14.
Fleming wasn’t through with interceptions on the night, intercepting the first pass attempt by Talleyrand on the Hawks next drive, returning it 28 yards down to the Rossview 29 to set the Burros up with yet another short field.
Again, Hillsboro would capitalize on the Rossview turnover, needing just two plays to take their first lead of the night, 20-14 after the extra-point was missed, with Alexander going in from 20-yards out for the touchdown.
After holding Rossview on its next drive, Hillsboro would go up two scores, needing only two plays to go 47 yards for the touchdown, with Jeremy Hill scoring on a seven-yard run – following a 46-yard pass play from Hughes to Jay King to set up the score.
Rossview would pin the Burros back at their own 10-yard line after their next drive stalled just past midfield, but Hillsboro marched 90 yards on nine plays – with Hill scoring his second touchdown of the night, from 12 yards out to make it 34-14.
But Rossview would end the 34-0 run by Hillsboro right before the half, with Luke breaking through the Burros defense and racing 59 yards for a touchdown – his second of the game – to make it 34-21 at halftime.
In the scored half, Rossview would have its chances to cut into the Hillsboro lead, putting together 10-play drives of its first two possessions of the second half, but come away with zero points as both drives stalled.
Hillsboro would extend its lead to 41-21 on its first drive of the fourth quarter, with Hill going in from six yard out for the touchdown – after a 42-yard pass from Hughes to Daniel Boleyjack set up the score.
The Hawks would finally break through and put its own second-half point on the board on the last play of the game, with Talleyrand finding Clayton Spence in the end zone for a touchdown for the 41-27 final – with no extra-point attempted after the score.
Rossview returns to action, at 7:00pm, on August 29th, as they return to Nashville to face the 1-0 McGavock High School Raiders.
