Nashville’s Sean Halton Goes 2-for-3 With Team’s Lone RBI

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds (74-62) allowed a franchise-high 20 runs to the visiting Sacramento River Cats to lose 20-1 Monday night at Greer Stadium. The loss, coupled with Memphis’ 1-0 win over Fresno, gives the Redbirds a one-game lead in the division.

Sacramento racked up 24 hits, matching the most allowed by Sounds pitchers in franchise history, to hand Nashville its largest deficit in a loss this season. Each of the R-Cats batters finished with multiple hits.

The River Cats went up 2-0 in the second inning when infielder Jose Martinez lifted pitcher Billy Buckner’s 2-1 pitch just over the left-field wall. The dinger scored Shane Peterson, who singled to get on base.

Buckner (4-6) surrendered two more runs in the top of the third inning: one via a wild pitch and another on Martinez’s two-out single. Martinez finished with three hits, while Nick Buss and Alden Carrithers totaled four each.

The 30-year-old Sounds pitcher took the loss in his first start for Nashville, allowing six runs on six hits over three innings of work. Buckner fired five strikeouts and issued two walks in the 74-pitch outing.

Sacramento continued its offensive barrage with four runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth to take an 11-1 lead on the Sounds.

Sounds reliever Jose De La Torre entered in the fourth inning to pitch three innings for Nashville, but allowed five runs to match a career-high on seven hits and one walk.

In the seventh inning, the R-Cats touched reliever Dustin Molleken for three runs on two hits and two walks. Only Rob Wooten kept the R-Cats off the board with his spotless eighth inning.

Reliever Tim Dillard followed in the ninth to let in six runs on five RBI singles, which included a ground ball single that spun into Matt Clark’s jersey to stop the play, and one throwing error by Dillard.

Outfielder Sean Halton, 2-for-3, gave Nashville its only run of the contest with his two-out single in the home half of the fourth inning. Pete Orr, Eugenio Velez, Jason Rogers, Hunter Morris and Caleb Gindl also recorded a hit in the contest.

The Sounds will play game three against Sacramento on Tuesday afternoon at 7:05pm. Nashville sends RHP Taylor Jungmann (8-5, 4.22) to the hill opposite the Sacramento’s RHP and former Vandy star Matt Buschmann (8-6, 4.56).
