Kenwood Knights Burned at Home by Pearl Cohn Firebirds 59-7

Kenwood High SchoolClarksville, TN – The Pearl Cohn Firebirds (2-0) were just too hot for the Kenwood Knights (0-2). Seven offensive possessions led to seven scores as the Firebirds defeated the Knights 59-7.

The Knights defense had no answers for the Firebirds offense on the ground or in the air. The Knights gave up big plays early, allowing the Firebirds to score 34 unanswered points in the first quarter.

The hole only got deeper as the Knights defense failed to tackle Firebird’s senior running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn. Vaughn averaged over 20 yards per carry on his way to 275 yards rushing with four touchdowns.

When Vaughn wasn’t spinning and dashing his way to the end zone, Firebirds quarterback Jimmy Ferrell was throwing bombs for touchdowns as well. Ferrell completed 9 of 12 passes for 219 yards, including three touchdown passes over 30 yards.

Two of those long touchdowns were caught by Rontavious Groves. Groves dove across the goal line to catch a 30-yard touchdown to give the Firebirds a 20-0 lead with 3:26 remaining in the first quarter. His second touchdown of the game was Ferrell’s longest completed pass, a 59-yard bomb in the third quarter to make the score 52-7.

The only thing that slowed down the Firebirds offense was penalties. They received six penalties, including one that brought back a touchdown run by Vaughn.

The Knights offense did not fare much better than their defense. A.J. Richardson carried most of the load with 17 carries for 73 yards.

Knights Senior Quarterback Malcolm Perry ducked and weaved his way to 41 yards rushing, but was only able to complete 2 of 13 pass attempts.

The Knights only touchdown came in the waning seconds of the first half. Perry threw a 20-yard touchdown to Jamaria Patterson.

Perry’s touchdown pass came after Vaughn’s longest touchdown run of the game. With a first down on their own 32-yard line, Vaughn broke two tackles and sprinted 68 yards down the side line to the end zone.

It was Vaughn’s fourth touchdown of the game and the Firebirds seventh score in the first half. Even the Firebird’s defense scored a touchdown.

Perry was picked off by Mario Gordon in the last second of the first quarter. Gordon took the interception 50 yards for a touchdown.

Ferrell’s 59-yard touchdown pass to Groves in the third quarter to make the score 52-7 was his last play of the game. Both he and Vaughn set out most of the second half.

The Firebirds last score was a 12-yard run by Ke’Juan Vaughn with 4:55 remaining in the game.

Next, the Knights will travel down Peacher’s Mill Road and try to get their first win of the season against the West Creek Coyotes.
