Austin Peay State University has a 180 year history in the community and has an enrollment of over 10,000 students. The dormitories on the campus are home to over 1500 female students.

As many of the incoming students to the campus range in age from 18 – 22, this is the perfect age group to introduce the importance of early detection through monthly breast self-exams. The residence hall teams worked to distribute the LIV as the female students check into their assigned dorm rooms.

Liv“We believe the LIV is one of the best ways to send the message and provide the tool to make the process easy to learn. Additionally, with the LIV we hope the young women will develop the habit of routine monthly exams that will carry on in their life, and thus maybe someday help them to detect an issue early enough to have a higher percentage of success in the treatment,” stated Christy Batts, broadband division manager at CDE Lightband.

CDE Lightband approached Geiger about the possibility of using the LIV to build awareness with the students and Geiger worked with LIV to get the $15.00 kit donated to the program.

“We are so excited that CDE Lightband and APSU wanted to work with us to deliver the LIV to the women at the university. We are very happy to offer them at no cost and to help educate women on the benefits of breast self-exams and that early detection can save lives.,” stated Geiger representative, Darrell Smith.

APSU housing director, Joe Mills, worked with both organizations to make sure that the kits were distributed as the female students moved in on campus this week. “This partnership is just another great example of the support we receive from the community for our students,” Mr. Mills stated.
