Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUAkron, OH – Freshman Christina White recorded a career-best 19 kills and led Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team to a four-set victory (25-19, 18-25, 25-17, 25-21) against Binghamton, Friday afternoon in the Akron Invitational at Rhodes Arena.

White got off to a good start with five kills in the opening set before posting four in the second set.

However, it was her eight kill effort in the fourth set that pushed her to the top of the Lady Govs attackers on the day. Senior outside hitter Jada Stotts had 18 kills, including an eight-kill, no-error effort in the third set.

“Christina stepped up and made a big difference in our offense,” said Lady Govs head coach Taylor Mott. “Jada also had a better match as well and that combo made things easier for us this afternoon. We still made a lot of errors but we were able to string together good runs of points to stay out front.”

APSU's Hillary PlybonAustin Peay (2-4) shook off the disappointment of its morning loss to Drake with a wire-to-wire win in the first set against Binghamton. The Lady Govs broke out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back.

Binghamton fended off four set points, thanks to a pair of Amanda Dettmann service aces, but senior middle blocker Hillary Plybon’s kill ended the frame, 25-19.

The second set was nip-and-tuck through the first 28 points, with the teams tied 14-14 at that point. However, Binghamton (0-4) pieced together an 8-1 run to break open the set at 21-15 and sailed to the match-leveling 25-18 victory.

APSU's Jada StottsAustin Peay took control of the third set with an impressive 9-2 run to turn a 7-6 deficit into a 16-9 lead. Stotts had four kills in that burst and finished with eight kills in the set. The teams would effectively trade points with a Binghamton attack error giving APSU a 25-17 win.

The decisive fourth set was dominated by a trio of four-point runs by Austin Peay. The last of those runs was punctuated by three White kills and gave the Lady Govs a 21-15 lead they would not relinquish. Junior setter Aubrey Marsellis closed the match with a service ace for a 25-21 set win.

APSU's Christina WhiteAfter its error-prone outing to start the day, Austin Peay settled down in the afternoon and committed just 21 attack errors with 56 kills (.240 attack percentage). The Lady Govs recorded five blocks in the contest, including three by Plybon.

Allison Hovie led Binghamton with 10 kills and the Bearcats finished with 41 kills and a .221 attack percentage.

Austin Peay returns to action with a pair of Saturday contests. The Lady Govs face Bryant in a 9:00am (CT) contest before meeting host Akron in the 7:00pm tournament finale.
